Upon its release in 1989, the Porsche 964 marked the biggest change to the 911 in its then 25-year history, with the engineers in Stuttgart claiming that 85 per cent of the new sports car’s componentry had been revised. The 964 was given a completely new light-alloy suspension with MacPherson struts at the front and coil springs at the rear. Steering a 964 is intuitive, with the lithe chassis ably coping with any twist or turn you throw at it. The 964 provides a charming mix of classic 911 silhouette with the addition of modern touches.
The Porsche 964 Speedster is a truly usable day-to-day proposition while still retaining the aesthetic and dynamic engagement prized by Porsche purists. The M64/0I six-cylinder boxer engine was boosted to 3.6 litres, producing 250 hp and 325 Nm torque at 4,800 rpm. The revised roof was easier to open and close than its predecessors and was far more waterproof. The Porsche 964 Carrera series has taken some time to reach the level of respect it now commands, but driving one today, it is plain to see why their popularity amongst modern classic collectors is growing; it’s an instantly invigorating experience.
