The SL-Class is a grand tourer sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation SL derives from the German Sport-Leicht, meaning Sport Light. Mercedes-Benz launched its new SL-Class (R230) of high-performance GTs in September 2001 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, though one had already served as Formula 1's Safety Car at Hockenheim in July. The SL Class was considered by many journalists to be the best-looking car that Mercedes-Benz had produced for many years.
Hailed by Evo magazine as 'a supercar in disguise', the SL55 AMG is powered by a 5.4 litre V8 engine producing 469bhp and a monstrous 520lb/ft of torque. The improved AMG 5.5-litre V8 supercharged engine at the heart of the SL 55 AMG was equipped with a new, higher-speed supercharger compressor and a larger throttle valve to optimise the fresh-air supply. The SL 55 AMG accelerates from 0 to 60mph in 4.5 seconds and goes on to reach a top speed of 186 mph.
