Based on what is probably the best-loved BMW car shape of recent times, the iconic BMW M5 E39 is a high-performance version of the 5 Series cars built by the Motorsport Division of BMW. The BMW E39 M5 recorded a lap time of 8:20 at the Nürburgring, making it one of the very fastest saloon cars of its day. All E39 M5s came equipped with a Getrag type D six-speed manual transmission. It is the same transmission as the one used in the E39 540i, but some changes were made to cope with the extra power produced by the S62 engine. The main differences were a reinforced clutch, a rear differential utilising a shorter 3.15:1 ratio, and a limited slip differential with 25% maximum locking.
The E39 M5 suspension shared its basic aluminium-intensive MacPherson strut/multi-link design of the V8-engined E39 5 series. However, several changes were made by BMW’s M Division including reduced spring height, which was 23 mm (0.9 in) lower. It also featured Servotronic speed-sensitive power assisted steering which provides two levels of resistance controlled via the console-mounted Sport button.
The Sport button also adjusted the electronic throttle butterflies for faster throttle response. Acceleration to 60 mph was achieved in 4.8 secs, and the top speed was electronically limited to 155 mph. De-restricted the M5 E39 will reach 186 mph. This is quite possibly the best sporting saloon that BMW ever produced.
This special car was supplied new by Woods of Bournemouth BMW in January 2000, and the running -in check was carried out in April 2000. Servicing has been carried out by BMW main dealers and BMW marque specialists. This special M5 has covered an extremely low mileage from new, and the history file includes historic MOTs. The car is presented in truly excellent condition and will benefit from a comprehensive 12-month warranty.
