Hexagon Classics are pleased to offer this BMW 540i M Sport Touring. It is an opportunity to purchase a rather unique last-of-the-line car. With just one owner from new, and a full-service history, this is a rare car indeed. The BMW E39 is the fourth generation of BMW 5 Series, which was sold from 1995 to 2004. It was launched in the saloon body style, with the Touring introduced in 1996. The E39 was replaced by the E60 in 2003, however E39 Touring models remained in production until 2004. The E39 was the first 5 Series to use aluminium components in the front suspension. The proportion of chassis components using aluminium significantly increased for the E39, to reduce weight.

The front suspension consists of MacPherson struts with six-cylinder cars using an aluminium front subframe. Aluminium is used for the steering knuckles, outer strut tube and the spring pads, resulting in a weight saving of 21 kg. V8 models also used aluminium in the steering box and several suspension links, to compensate for the heavier steel subframe. The rear suspension consists of a four-link design (called “Z-link”), which is very similar to the system used in the E38 7 Series.

The 540i Touring is certainly a car you can drive every day, and the E39 5 Series is now viewed as one of Chief Designer Chris Bangle’s greatest achievements. This is the nearest thing to the car BMW should probably have produced, an M5 Touring!
