Introduced in 1972 the 3.0CSL was produced as a homologation special so to ensure that the E9 coupé was eligible for racing in the European Touring Car Championship. The "L" in the designation meant "Leicht".    The lightness was achieved by using thinner steel to build the unit body, deleting the trim and soundproofing, using aluminium alloy doors, bonnets, and boot lids. Our car is one of only five hundred 3.0CSLs ever produced for the United Kingdom.

Initially using the same engine as the 3.0CS the 3.0CSL was given a very small increase in displacement to
3,003 cc (183.3 cu in) by increasing the engine bore. This was done in August 1972 to allow the CSL to be raced in the "over three litre" racing category allowing for some increase in displacement in the racing cars.

The success of the CSL was instant with notable wins in 1973 by Chris Amon, at Nürburgring,Toine Hezemans won the European Touring Car Championship, Dieter Quester took a class victory at Le Mans. In the German Touring Car Grand Prix of that year Chris Amon and Hans-Joachim Stuck won again in the 3.0CSL. The BMW 3.0 CSL’s went on to win the European Touring Car Championship again in every year from 1975 to 1979! A success never to be repeated again by any other manufacture. Finally in the IMSA GT Championship 1975, Sam Posey, Brian Redman, and Ronnie Peterson one races throughout that season.

Production of the CSL commenced in 1972 at the Karmann factory in Osnabruck, Germany, with all 500 cars being completed by 1972. Regulations at the time required all duties to be paid on date of import so the cars were only imported by BMW Concessionaires once a customer had confirmed a contract to purchase. The car was built in 1972 and therefore qualifies for the Historic category vehicle taxation class.

Our car was first registered in May 1974 and commissioned to be supplied in Chamonix White with the factory optional City Package (this was unique specification for the UK market) to C.R Page of London NW3. The BMW has had only 6 further owners since new including the famous English aristocrat The Marquis of Blanford; accompanying the CSL is a very comprehensive chassis file which includes:

- BMW Classic Certificate (issued 05.06.2012 Munich)

- Mot’s dating  back to 1982

- Various maintenance invoices dating back to 1980

The CSL is presented in superb order throughout with the benefit of a recent service by leading BMW historic specialist and fitment of security Tracker and classic audio upgrade.  With a speedo reading of only 89,995 m this BMW represents a unique opportunity to acquire a rare and fast approaching true homologation classic.
